When beginning a building program, the church leaders must first define the vision clearly. Is the need for sanctuary capacity, school, office, all-purpose, dining, housing, or any combinations of the above? Research existing facility and property expansion possibilities to meet these needs, plus an additional 50%
After identifying the project scope, the city zoning and variance board should be contacted to see if such a project would gain the approval from local planning and zoning. During this period the church should research the amount and source of financing available to them for project funding. The church should include a capital campaign in their financing plans to both assist funding the project as well as to allow the membership to be included in God’s blessing and to assure support to its leadership.
With city approval and financing capabilities in hand, the church should now secure an architect to design the projected vision with the church’s budget in mind. Be sure to include all soft costs in addition to building construction costs. Remember, any project can be put on paper, but first make sure it will be approved by city planning and zoning boards and can be financed by the church.
